New Zealand is potentially facing a dementia epidemic

This is a nationwide issue

Affecting:

Health and Beauty,

A report estimates that in 2008 there were an estimated 40,746 New Zealanders with dementia. Of these 12,333 were newly diagnosed in 2008.

“By 2026, the number of New Zealanders with dementia is projected to increase to 74,821. By 2050,
there will be 146,699 people with dementia.

There is a serious lack of funding and public awareness on the difficulties people have to go through, not only those suffering from dementia, but also for the families, where caring for their loved ones becomes a full time job with no respite.

I experienced obstacles through the following stages: recognising a problem myself, recognising the problem as a family, learning the options for care, learning what are the things you weigh up in deciding about care, appreciating the principles of self determination, understanding the love, purpose and collaboration required to make good decisions, and support through the heartache, appreciating the person within the dementia and entering into their world instead ..."
