Police Quota System

An age old topic in NZ but have not seen it mentioned on ThinkSmall yet, so i'll raise it. What bothers me about the police quota system is that firstly it is giving the police a bad name because they are pressured into meeting these quotas. Additionally because they are being pressured into meeting their quotas for speeding tickets, they may ‘cheat’ the system by abusing the fact that young drivers who feel less confident dealing around the law may not know their rights to see the reading and ensure the unit they used to test the speed is correctly calibrated, and so more and more police seem to be going after people who are fractionally above the speed limit and giving them the fine for it. And of cause this quota system does not apply to only speeding infringements. I have also heard stories of the following:

Rolling at a stop sign - ie not putting the hand break on, but yet still stopping.

Waiting for people to pull out of their driveway without their seatbelt on – the older generation who grew up without seatbelts often put it on when they are drawing off away from their driveway.

In fact the police have been giving so many tickets as of late, they have incorporated e-banking into their website to make it easier to pay fines.

It seems a bit petty when they should be out looking for ‘real’ criminals that seem to be always lurking around and killing dairy owners.
