Dogma
I think when people consider minimum wage they instantly recognise it as being the wage that teenagers with after school jobs are on. But this is the type of dogma that is holding us back.
Many families have to get by with one of the parents being on minimum wage. There should be a better way of distinguishing the rates. Last year due to a green party bill, youth rates were abolished and after a youth works 200 hours, they are entitled to the same rate of pay as an adult in the work force, this is great for the youth as youth rates were virtually slave labour before.
The minimum wage for adults, ie those 21 and over should be increased to something around $15 which will help better support working families, while re instating a kind of youth rate for all under 21, which increases at the same percentage every year as that of the adult rate.
