part of the problem is also part of the solution. We are in a generation of absentee fathers and a lack of positive role models in youths life is causing them to gravitate to anything resembling a father figure. Whether that is gangs, media icons etc.

Mentor programmes may not be a complete solution, but they can work.

"I was a mentor for an 11 year old boy in a mentoring programme that the Boys and Girls Institute in Wellington ran. It is an excellent programme and I would highly recommend anyone interested in mentoring to find out about local programmes in their area. It was a highly rewarding experience and a lot of fun."

"I'm 29 and would like to spend time with young people that don't have enough people in their lives to lean on... My place got broken into a couple of months ago, they caught the young guy who is 17... my stuff is gone, but I'm gong along to catchup with him and his family, and chat, maybe use it as an opportunity to hang with someone who might need it... If young people are doing stuff in society that isn't any good, then it's for the better of all that we all make it part of lives to hel..."
